Planet-eater’s sudden lunch spotted

Astronomers have caught a rare event, a black hole biting a chunk from an object – either a small star or a big planet – that strayed too close.
The feeding happened in galaxy NGC 4845, 47 million light-years away, and was witnessed by ESA’s Integral space observatory and other star-watching stations.

NASA wants $100 million to pull mineral-rich rocks closer to Earth for study


NASA is requesting $100 million for a mission that would include identifying an asteroid in space, moving it towards the Moon, and sending astronauts to study it. It comes as the showdown over the 2014 budget continues in Washington.
